Walking through the Secrets of the Algarve

SUPPLIER: MegaSport Turismo e Eventos

An itinerary of walks over 6 days around the Algarve’s most beautiful secrets. With its incredible diversity and great scenic beauty, the Algarve can be sub-divided into three main strips: the western and southern coastline on the Atlantic, the uplands of the serra and the barrocal in between. The itinerary starts in Sagres with a walk along the fantastic Vicentine Coast, with its huge cliffs facing the Atlantic Ocean.

We walk to Monchique, the highest point in the Algarve, and discover its exuberant landscapes and the reason it is known as “The Garden of the Algarve”. In the uplands of the Serra do Caldeirão, the walk take us back in time, to the traditional customs and crafts that still live on here.

We reach the barrocal, the intermediate zone between the coast and the uplands, where most of the Algarve’s agricultural produce comes from. We move on to a walk through the Ria Formosa Natural Park – one of Portugal’s seven natural wonders – and continue to Alcoutim, where we will find evidence of ancient human settlements. Here, we will be able to see the border between Portugal and Spain, marked by the iconic river Guadiana.
